Despite the fact that Addabbo is a Democrat, the “Joe’s Gotta Go” coalition feels the senator is far too conservative on the issues, and is looking to replace him with someone much more progressive.
Well, there’s another candidate that is also drawing a lot of attention from potential challengers, but in this case it’s because she is far too conservative. And that is, of course, Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.
The Sunnyside GOP recently hosted one of those candidates in Republican John Cummings.
Cummings is a retired police officer and history teacher at St. Raymond’s in the Bronx. According to a short release sent out by the club, he told members he decided to run because he felt Congress has moved away from its constitutional mandates and limitations.
He joins at least five (!) other Republican challengers in what is shaping up to be a crowded primary next June. They include Ruth Papazian, a medical journalist from the Bronx; Antoine Tucker, a Brooklyn native who now lives in the Bronx and went to prison over a decade ago for selling drugs; Rey Solano, a Bronx businessman; Miguel Hernandez, a contractor and resident of Manhattan; and Scherie Murray, a Queens resident who has been very active in the Queens County Republican Party for years.
We recently found a flyer for Murray’s campaign on the street in Sunnyside, which is how we find out about so many candidates these days. If not for a discarded campaign flyer (also found in Sunnyside – who needs the Internet?!), we would have never know that our old friend James Dillon is again running for Congress, planning to challenge AOC on the Democratic line.
Joining Dillon as a challenger on the Democratic line is Badrun Khan, a mother of two and member of Community Board 2 in Queens. In announcing her candidacy, Khan said Ocasio-Cortez has lost sight of the needs of her constituents in Queens and the Bronx.
“The people of the 14th district deserve a Congresswoman who wants to solve the problems of our community, not the world,” she said.
All we know is that if Ocasio-Cortez’s town hall last week, where either a crazy person or Republican plant implored people to “eat the babies” to combat global warming, is any indication, this is going to be a wild, wild election!
