New Assemblyman Phil Goldfeder has recently launched a campaign to remove the toll from the bridge and make it free for all drivers. It currently costs $3.25 each way for mainlanders to use the bridge.
It’s difficult to understand why the toll is there in the first place, as there is no other bridge span within a single borough that has a toll. Sure, there are bridges that cross from Queens to the Bronx and Brooklyn to Staten Island, but not one that toll driver for traveling within a borough.
Is that because we mainland Queens residents look at the Rockaways as not really in Queens? Is it a stepchild? Are the Rockaways somewhere we are not comfortable talking about?
Maybe the toll has something to do with that.
Goldfeder is right on with this rally cry, and he's right to pressure the governor and the MTA to get this done.
Governor Andrew Cuomo is from Queens. Getting rid of the toll would be part of his legacy.
