There better be some grizzy-sized shoes for sale on the Fulton Street Mall, because the St. Joseph’s College Bears punched their tickets to the big dance.

Lisa Scheer’s game-winning RBI delivered the Bears to a thrilling 2-1 extra-innings victory over the College of St. Elizabeth last Saturday in the Hudson Valley Women’s Athletic Conference championship game.

Scheer’s knock, a shot off the left field wall, ended a daylong pitcher’s duel that saw Scheer strike out 11 batters over the course of 11 scoreless innings and gave the Lady Bears their third HVWAC title.

The Mary Louis alum got off to a quick start, retiring the first five batters she faced.

The teams were held scoreless until the eighth inning, when the tiebreaker rule went into effect, placing a runner on second base to start each frame.

In the top of the eighth, St. Elizabeth sacrificed their leadoff batter successfully moving the runner to third, but the Lady Bears only miscue allowed the runner to score on the throw to first.

In the bottom half, St. Joseph’s Jennifer Safi popped up attempted to advance lead runner Carissa Cancemi to third, but a St. Elizabeth throwing error on the double-play attempt allowed Cancemi to advance. A sacrifice fly by Theresa Mendez to left field tied the game 1-1.

Scheer escaped a jam in the 9th, overcoming a leadoff walk by retiring three straight batters to leave runners on second and third.

After saving the game, Scheer then ended it by smacking the first pitch she saw to left field, plating runner Jackie Marinello from second and setting off a wild celebration.

For her effort, Scheer was named HVWAC tournament Most Valuable Player.

With the win, the Lady Bears advanced to the United States Collegiate Athletic Association tournament. The fifth seeded Lady Bears are matched up against #4 Southern Virginia University. The Lady Bears improved their record to 26-8. The 26 wins are the most for any team in St. Joseph’s athletics history.
