A two-run blast from Krystal Puga in the sixth was the difference, as Tori Free and McKenzie Murray combined for a one-hitter to help propel St. John’s softball past Seton Hall, 2-1, on Saturday afternoon in South Orange.

With the win and Villanova’s loss to Providence later in the day, the Johnnies (29-15, 15-4) clinched the Big East regular-season championship, claiming the program’s second title in three years.

Free (7-7) picked up her seventh victory in the circle as the senior struck out six over five innings, with the only blemish coming off a solo home run in the fourth. Murray locked up her fourth save after tossing two innings of no-hit ball.

Puga knocked her third home run in five games to provide the scoring for the Red Storm. Senior Monique Landini had a hit and scored the other run, while Gretchen Bowie and Savannah Warren recorded the other two hits.

After three scoreless innings from Free and Lauren Fischer, Seton Hall (22-23-1, 7-12) struck first with a solo shot from Noel Lent in the fourth.

Landini broke up the no hitter in the sixth with a leadoff bunt. Two batters later, Puga erased the shutout and put the Red Storm on top with a two-run bomb to right-center for her fourth home run of the season.

With one on and no outs in the sixth, Murray came in to relieve Free and got a double play before a groundout to third ended the inning.

Murray loaded the bases in the seventh, but got a game-ending strikeout to secure the Johnnies 15th conference win.
