The Sunnyside Shines Business Improvement District began its annual weekly series of events last Thursday at the plaza underneath the 7 train at 46th Street and Queens Boulevard, more commonly known as Bliss Plaza.
It’s part of the organization’s “Summer Thursdays” lineup that will bring games, performances and music to the neighborhood.
“Summer Thursdays is designed to bring activities to Bliss Plaza that the whole family can enjoy,” said Sunnyside Shines executive director Jaime-Faye Bean.
From 3 to 7 p.m. every Thursday, the plaza will have games, arts and crafts workshops, dance lessons and even live music. The event schedule includes performances by the Street Beat Brass Band, Ali Belo and the Sweet Wire Band, and Serhat Kaner.
Local businesses and organizations like the Sunnyside Ballet School, Queens Music Academy, Thalia Spanish Theatre and McManus Irish Dance are expected to participate as well.
Funding for the series came from Councilman Jimmy Van Bramer’s office through the Neighborhood Development Grant Initiative. They also received additional funding from the Queens Council on the Arts and TD Bank.
“We are thrilled to work with so many enthusiastic partners who are eager to share their talent and their pride in our neighborhood,” Bean said, “and we invite everyone to swing by and join us for games, music and fun every Thursday afternoon.”
