For eight weekends between May and September, the N train in Astoria will be shut down for track and switch work from 12 a.m. Saturday to 5 a.m. Monday.

A free shuttle bus will replace the N train between Astoria-Ditmars Boulevard and Queensboro Plaza in both directions. MTA representatives along the seven-stop shuttle bus route will be on site to assist customers.

The closure will occur on May 20-22 and 27-30 (Memorial Day), June 3-5, August 12-14, 19-21 and 26-28, and September 2-5 (Labor Day) and 9-11.

“We strive to be good neighbors while providing safe and reliable service, which is why we scheduled the closures during periods of light ridership in order to minimize the impact to customers,” said acting New York City Transit (NYCT) president Darryl Irick.

MTA crews will replace all the switches along a 73-foot span of elevated track south of the Ditmars Boulevard station. They will also replace track panels and steel girders that support the elevated structure.

MTA officials said the upgrades will help reduce noise from trains along the line, which runs through residential and commercial areas and past PS 85 near the Astoria Boulevard stop.

“This work will increase reliability of service and reduce train noise,” Irick said, “two things the community has long asked for from MTA.”

Councilman Costa Constantinides said the infrastructure improvements on the N line were “long-anticipated.”

“For the entire school community at PS 85, this is a sigh of relief,” he said. “Elementary school children should not have to bear the burden of repeated interruptions while engaging in the learning process.”
