People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) members gave away frozen vegan fish filets in honor of Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s pledge to go vegetarian for Lent in honor of Congressman Jamie Raskin’s late vegan son, Thomas Bloom Raskin, who passed away in December.

“Tommy Raskin spent his life passionately advocating for all animals, and PETA’s giveaway will help Representative Ocasio-Cortez bring people along with her,” said PETA president Ingrid Newkirk.

The event took place near the Roosevelt Avenue-Jackson Heights MTA station on Thursday.

“We thought that it was so wonderful that she not only decided to go vegetarian for Lent for Jamie Raskin’s son, but asked others to join her,” said PETA associate director Ashley Byrne. “So we wanted to help by giving vegan food and recipes to her constituents.”

Within 30 minutes, all of the food was gone and volunteers spent time handing out vegan recipes. Volunteer Victoria Lagardera has been vegan for eight years, and grew up vegetarian.

“We chose fish because the days after the fast people will generally eat fish instead of other meats because they think it is less wasteful and better for their health,” siad Lagardera. “We’re here to tell them that fish do feel pain, emotions, and there have been so many studies that demonstrate that.”
