Three Stars of the Week: September 10th – September 16th

Francisco Lindor – Mets

Three home runs in the Subway Series finale took the headlines after a hard-fought weekend of baseball, as Francisco Lindor pushed the Mets over their crosstown rivals. After Giancarlo Stanton’s towering homer tied the game, he and Lindor shared words. Both benches cleared in the flare-up, but nothing came of it as Stanton finished rounding the bases. Lindor backed his words up in the next innings to put the Mets up for good hitting his third homer of the day to put the Mets back on top, 7-6. Over the Series, Lindor hit four homers and drove in six runs, a vital part of the Mets offense that erupted for 24 runs in the second Subway Series.

Zach Wilson – Jets

The Jets didn’t pick up a Week 1 win, but rookie QB Zach Wilson showed plenty of promise. The former BYU star threw for 258 yards and his first two NFL touchdowns in a 19-14 loss to the Panthers. The blame doesn’t lie on Wilson, who didn’t quite get the protection he needed from the offensive line. Still, his two TD passes to Corey Davis put the Jets on the board and opened the scoring for what’s hopefully a transformative year in the ongoing Jets rebuild. Wilson was picked off once and threw 20 completions in 37 attempts. He overcame a shaky start to the game and helped start a comeback that fell just a few points short.

Nikolas Vidal – Queensboro FC II

Queensboro FC II brought three points back to Queens after a trip up to Albany this weekend. Upstate, it was Nikolas Vidal scoring a brace as QBFC won their 7th USL Academy League game of the year. Vidal’s first goal came just shy of the half-hour mark, assisted by Damien Barker. In the dying minutes, with the match level at 1, Vidal struck again, with Mario Salguero setting up his 87th minute game-winning goal. The late road goal clinched a 5th consecutive victory for Queensboro. They haven’t lost in 9 matches, dating back to their mid-May defeat to Ironbound SC.
