Green-Wood to host post-Thanksgiving events

Instead of trampling over people on Black Friday, Green-Wood Cemetery will hold post-Thanksgiving events on-site for all ages to enjoy.
Their annual Post Turkey Day Walking Tour will be held on Friday, Nov. 26 from 1-3 p.m., and will provide guests with a relaxing, almost therapeutic experience by observing all the beauty the cemetery has to offer, even in the middle of Brooklyn.
“You get to see some of the trees that have already started to change color and talk about the permanent residents at Green-Wood,” said Derya Mergin, Manager of Public Programs.
“You also get to visit the catacombs, which are usually not open to visitors unless it’s a special event or tour.”
Mergin added that she loves to see people from far and wide visiting Green-Wood Cemetery because of its rich New York and American history, as well as an array of interesting art and architecture.
“It’s a great way to get out of the house after eating all that pumpkin pie and turkey,” she said. “When you’re stuck in a small space, it’s a great way to get away from the family in some instances.”
In addition to the walking tour, Green-Wood holds a plethora of interactive events, including their “After the End” art installation featuring artwork from Candy Chang and James A. Reeves, and Green-Wood’s artist in residence event, “Latent Teloneum” featuring Heidi Lau.
Mergin said that these events are held in hopes of engaging visitors and inspiring them to visit more often.
Tickets for the Post Turkey Day Walking Tour can be purchased on Green-Wood’s website at $30 per person, $25 for members.
Her advice to those planning to go on the walking tour: “Dress warm, wear comfortable shoes and stretchy pants.”
